When & How to Apply
The Graduate College opens its on-line Apply Yourself system on September 15. To receive full consideration for admission and financial awards, completed applications must be received by December 15. In rare occasions we might consider late applicants with unique academic records or research experience.
We rarely admit students to start the Ph.D. program in the spring semester. The exceptions are students transferring programs within the University, usually after completing a related master's degree, or students who applied for fall enrollment but were delayed in starting due to unforeseeable circumstances.
Online Application: Apply through the Graduate College's online Apply Yourself system. Your resume, statement of purpose, letters of recommendations and transcripts should be uploaded to the system. Here are instructions on the Apply Yourself system, and answers to frequently asked questions about the Graduate College application process.
If you are a current UIUC graduate student or have attended UIUC as a graduate student in the past, please read our FAQs for information on how to apply.
Recommendations: Use the Apply Yourself system to request recommendation letters from your references. They will be able to enter recommendations online. If there are any difficulties with the system, please ask your references to email (preferred) or mail their letters directly to Professor Faranak Miraftab, whose address is below.

Scores may be entered into the Apply Yourself system. Please request official scores to be sent to institutional code 1836 (department codes are not used).
